Home Assistant Consultant for Privacy-First Smart Homes

Done-for-you Home Assistant consulting. You bring the problem and the access. I scope it, build it, and deliver a finished system - documented and ready to run.

You want the privacy and control of Home Assistant. You just want someone to build it.

You have been reading about Home Assistant for months. Maybe longer. You understand why it is the right choice. What you do not have is the time -- or the patience -- to figure out why your automations keep breaking at 2am.

You know cloud-based systems mean your data lives on someone else's servers, that companies can shut down services you depend on, and that monthly subscriptions are forever. Home Assistant solves all of that -- but the gap between "I installed it" and "it actually works the way I want it to" can feel enormous.

You do not need to become a Home Assistant expert. You need someone who already is one to take the project off your plate, build what you need, and hand it back to you documented and running.

That is exactly what this service is. Done-for-you Home Assistant consulting. You bring the problem and the access. I scope it, build it, and deliver it.

"I've talked through smart home upgrades, workflow improvements, tech options for various projects and more, and Ashley shows up to each conversation with a startling amount of knowledge on the subject, insights into how things can connect that I would never see, and the patience of a saint. I can't recommend her highly enough."

What a Home Assistant consultant actually does for you

A Home Assistant consultant is not a tutor. The right consultant understands your specific setup, your network, your devices, and your daily routines -- and translates all of that into a system that works the way your household actually lives.

That means getting your cameras integrated and recording locally. Getting your automations to fire reliably. Hardening your network so your smart home is not a security liability. And handing it back to you with documentation thorough enough that you are not dependent on anyone to keep it running.

I do not sit on a call while you make configuration changes. I take the work off your plate entirely. You provide access and context. I do the work between milestones and deliver finished results.

How the engagement works

A defined process from first contact to delivered system

Step 1: Book a qualifying call

Use the scheduler below to book a brief call. This is not a sales call - it is a mutual assessment. I want to make sure I can actually solve your problem before we both invest further.

Step 2: Complete the intake survey

After booking, you will receive a short intake survey. Describe your current setup, what is not working, and what you want. I review every response before we speak so the call is focused and useful.

Step 3: Paid scoping engagement

A 90-minute virtual walkthrough via Google Meet. You walk me through your home, devices, network, and routines. I ask questions. I take notes. Within five business days you receive a scoping report: findings, recommendations, prioritized action items, and a project plan. The final invoice triggers report delivery and a link to book a review call.

Step 4: Implementation (if you proceed)

Implementation is scoped and priced from the report. Engagements are milestone-based. I work independently between check-ins, communicate via email within 48 business hours Monday through Friday 10am to 5pm ET, and provide weekly status updates. Scope changes after the service agreement is signed require a change order.

Pricing is not listed here. Every project is scoped individually. Pricing details for both the scoping engagement and any subsequent implementation are provided during the qualifying call.

How I work

This is a principal-led engagement. When you work with Serenity, you work with me.

I am not a dispatch service. I handle every project personally -- scoping, configuration, testing, documentation, and delivery. There is no junior consultant, no outsourced tier, no handoff.

Communication is via email, responded to within 48 business hours Monday through Friday 10am to 5pm ET. Weekly status updates are provided via email. Bi-weekly check-in calls are available. If something urgent comes up outside that window, I will be in touch as soon as I can.

I work independently between milestones. You are not watching over my shoulder on a screen share while I configure your system. You give me access, I do the work, I deliver finished results. If you want to be involved in every configuration decision, this service is probably not the right fit -- and that is worth knowing before we start.

A real project, real outcomes

What delivered results actually look like

A recent client had Home Assistant running but could not get his cameras integrated. He had watched the videos, read the documentation -- nothing was clicking. After scoping, I had a clear picture of what the actual blockers were. The delivered system included:

  • All cameras integrated into Home Assistant with local recording configured
  • HomeKit integration for iPhone access without cloud dependency
  • Network storage for video recordings using hardware he already owned
  • Contact sensor automations that triggered recording only when needed -- no storage bloat
  • Documentation identifying which cameras were causing problems and what to replace them with

He received a finished system, written documentation for maintaining it, and a prioritized list of what to build next. He did not watch me work. He got the result.

This is consulting, not co-working. I work with what you have, solve the problems you are actually facing, and deliver something you can run and expand on your own.

What I work on

Every engagement is scoped to your system, your devices, and your goals

Common project types

  • Camera integration including HomeKit sharing, local storage setup, and motion-triggered recording
  • Platform migration from SmartThings, Wink, or other discontinued platforms to Home Assistant
  • Automation design built around your actual daily routines -- not tutorial examples
  • System architecture for clients starting from scratch who want it done right the first time
  • Network segmentation and security hardening including VLANs, firewall rules, and secure remote access
  • Protocol selection and device rationalization across Z-Wave, Zigbee, Matter, and Thread
  • Dashboard design built for your household, not a demo environment
  • Integration with existing ecosystems including HomeKit, Homebridge, and other platforms

"Ashley's expertise and thorough evaluation were incredibly helpful! I truly appreciate the work she put into the project."

Jekia L.

What every engagement includes

  • Scoping report with findings, recommendations, and project plan
  • Milestone-based delivery -- no open-ended hourly billing
  • Written documentation tailored to your specific system
  • Maintenance guidance so you can operate the system independently
  • Weekly status updates via email
  • Bi-weekly check-in calls available
  • 48-business-hour email response window
  • Defined scope -- changes after agreement require a change order
  • Ongoing remote support is available after delivery -- details and pricing are discussed during the qualifying call and defined in the service agreement

I support Home Assistant because the ecosystem is worth protecting

10% of all remote consulting revenue is donated to the Open Home Foundation

The Open Home Foundation is the nonprofit that owns and protects Home Assistant, ESPHome, Music Assistant, and dozens of other open source smart home projects. They fight for privacy, choice, and sustainability in smart home technology -- the same values that brought you here.

Home Assistant is a labor of love maintained by thousands of contributors. When you invest in a properly architected Home Assistant system, you are not just solving your own problem. You are helping ensure these privacy-first tools remain free and open for everyone. The Foundation works at the policy level, funds critical open source development, and protects these projects from corporate acquisition and abandonment.

This matters to me personally. I use Home Assistant in my own home. I chose it for the same reasons you are considering it. Supporting the ecosystem that makes this work possible is not a marketing note -- it is something I would do whether or not I mentioned it here.

You can also support the Open Home Foundation directly through Home Assistant Cloud subscriptions or by purchasing official hardware from their partners.

Watch how centralized local control works

Complete home control from one dashboard

Centralized smart home automation through Home Assistant. Lighting, climate, and more -- all managed from a single dashboard, with no cloud dependency and no monthly fee.

Instant device response with no cloud lag

Local control means no round-trip to a server in another state. Brightness, color, power -- one tap, instant response. This is what your system should feel like.

No more app hopping. No more cloud dependencies. One unified platform that puts you in complete control.

Who this is for -- and who it is not

This is the right fit if you:

  • Want a working Home Assistant system and do not want to build it yourself
  • Started a DIY setup, hit a wall, and need someone to finish the job correctly
  • Are migrating from SmartThings, Wink, or another discontinued platform
  • Want local control and privacy but need someone to architect and implement it
  • Value expertise and are comfortable handing the project off
  • Are located anywhere in the US for remote work, or in NJ, PA, or DE for in-person

This is not the right fit if you:

  • Want to pair program or be involved in every configuration decision in real time
  • Are looking for ongoing hand-holding or unlimited support access outside a defined scope
  • Are not yet sure whether Home Assistant is the right platform for your situation -- the qualifying call can help assess fit, but if you need a deep education on platform options first, do more research before reaching out
  • Want someone to manage your system indefinitely without a defined engagement scope

The right client reads this page and thinks: finally, someone who will just handle it. If that is not you right now, that is fine. It is useful information either way.

✨ Testimonials From Our Smart Home Automation Clients ✨

Why work with Serenity Smart Homes for Home Assistant consulting?

Ashley Williams, Founder of Serenity Smart Homes

I bring over 20 years of cybersecurity and internet infrastructure experience to residential smart home systems. Before founding Serenity Smart Homes, I solved complex technical problems for enterprise clients. I apply that same discipline here: proper architecture, documented deliverables, and systems built to last -- not to require ongoing intervention.

I chose Home Assistant for my own home for the same reasons you are considering it: complete local control, no cloud dependencies, and genuine privacy. I understand the platform because I use it daily -- not just as a consultant, but as someone who holds the same values you do.

Serenity Smart Homes is an NJ SBE and MWBE-certified firm, a Loxone Silver Partner, and a CEDIA member. I hold a CLIPP designation (Certified Living in Place Professional, credential C00967) and a Home Improvement Contractor license.

What this means for your project

  • Enterprise security practices applied to residential systems
  • Privacy-first architecture -- your data stays in your home
  • Documented deliverables you can actually use and maintain
  • Systems designed so you are not dependent on me to keep them running
  • Bonded, insured, and background-checked

Still Have Questions About Professional Home Assistant Consulting?

Here are the questions I hear most from people exploring this service.

I bring over 20 years of enterprise infrastructure experience to residential automation. DIY tutorials get you started, but professional consulting means rock-solid reliability, proper network security, encrypted backups, and systems configured correctly from the ground up. You receive finished deliverables -- not a co-working session where you're doing the work while I watch.

Remote training is not part of this service. What I do provide is written documentation tailored to your system: how to maintain what was built, how to make simple changes, and what to do if something needs attention. The goal is that you can operate and expand your system independently after delivery. An in-person workshop is being developed separately for those who want structured instruction.

Yes -- that is exactly how the engagement starts. The entry point is a paid scoping engagement. I conduct a 90-minute virtual walkthrough of your home, devices, network, and routines via Google Meet. Within five business days I deliver a scoping report: findings, recommendations, prioritized action items, and a project plan. Implementation is scoped and priced from that report. You are never committing to full implementation before you know what it will cost and what it will involve.

Remote consulting is available nationwide. I work with clients anywhere in the United States. In-person installation and hands-on work is available in New Jersey, Eastern Pennsylvania, and Northern Delaware. For complex projects outside that region, I can recommend trusted local installers.

Timeline depends on scope, which is determined during the scoping engagement. Simple configurations may be completed in a few days after scoping. More complex systems with multiple integrations, camera setups, and custom automations typically run two to four weeks from signed agreement to final delivery. I do not provide same-day or one-day installation estimates before scoping is complete.

Yes. This is one of the most common reasons people reach out. Most DIY setups stall at network reliability, device pairing, or automation logic -- the parts where experience matters most. The scoping engagement identifies exactly where things broke down and what it will take to finish the job correctly.

Even technically capable clients benefit from working with someone who has built dozens of these systems in real homes. I know which devices fail in practice, how to avoid configuration patterns that cause problems six months later, and how to build systems that do not require constant maintenance. The scoping report alone typically saves clients from expensive hardware mistakes.

Support terms are defined in the service agreement before work begins. I stand behind what I deliver -- if something stops working due to a configuration error on my part, I will address it. Ongoing remote support is also available as a separate engagement after the initial project is complete. Details and pricing are covered during the qualifying call.

In most cases, yes. Home Assistant supports over 3,000 integrations -- Philips Hue, security cameras, HVAC systems, Z-Wave and Zigbee devices, and more. During the scoping engagement, I audit your current devices and document what will work seamlessly, what needs a workaround, and what should be replaced for better reliability.

If you value privacy, local control, and no monthly fees, yes. Ring and Nest subscriptions run $10 to $30 per month -- that is up to $5,400 over five years for features you already paid for in hardware. A properly scoped Home Assistant system is a one-time investment you own outright. Your data stays in your home, not on Amazon or Google servers.

Smart Home Automation Brands and Tech I Work With

I work with a wide range of trusted brands, and I'll work with what you already have. Whether you're starting fresh or blending old and new devices, my goal is to create a smooth, privacy-focused system that works locally, not in the cloud.
